Designer Jackye Lanham is known for her luxurious interiors that combine both color and comfort. She believes that a successful design not only includes collections, but has layers of details that encompass a room. Wallpaper, drapes, furniture and finally accessories are all layers which if carefully chosen and edited can make a grand impact and a bold statement. Lanham suggests to start with a color palette. I always suggest to include a color which you adore the most and work around that color using the color wheel. Fabrics should flow from one room to another and objects should be interesting. Lanham is known for her extravagance so it is no wonder that she suggests collecting silver, pottery and porcelain which all reflect the light and are brilliant all on their own. Think about layering in collections which have exquisite ornate appeal such as transferware, tortoiseshell, walnut burl, and ebony. Consider limestone flooring and detailed marble counter tops that pull the eye to the detail of the natural beauty. Tantalizing textures such as gold and silver in vases, frames, or cutlery can go a long way to adding in the splendor of the room.

Transferware is known for its flaunting elegance and florid detail which can go a long way to dressing up any room. Lanham tells Southern Accents that "European manor houses and castles had whole sets of ceramics on the walls," Lanham explains. "The displays were a show of wealth in the same way that armaments in the entry hall were a show of power."

Jackye Lanham Interiors- Transferware Wall Collections

It is important to keep the colors uniform. Patterns should be all in one shade with a few solid pieces that help highlight the others. As you can see above, Lanham includes frames of additional collections, a mirror and additional pieces which match. Let the patterns and collections play off one another. Carved frames or silver or gold-leaf can add tremendous depth and contrast. Plates can be beautiful in any room, such as the bedroom, foyer, hallways and unexpected places.

Creating a design using transferware can be an overwhelming endeavour. Lanham suggests a solution to working with odd shapes and sizes to first create a pattern such as you would see on fabric like damask or chintz.

You will first need a location that would best suit the collection. Start with producing an uncomplicated shape such as a circle, fan, rectangle or square. She says that in formal settings, it could be important to create a pattern with even amounts of pieces, but you can also arrange pieces in odd numbers such as rows of three in a grid pattern.

Atlanta designer Dan Carithers, gives a very practical tip that he always lays out the pattern on the floor in an area that corresponds in size to the wall he is composing for the ideal working space. Doesn't that make sense? Sketching the overall look on a piece of paper can allow you to put the plates away and continue collecting until the overall design has been met. London designer

Jane Churchill also goes through a similar design process...." place the plates on the floor within these measurements, and then move them around until I'm happy with the arrangement."

Dallas designer Beverly Field plans the design on the floor, and then hangs the middle piece first. "Decide if you want to work smaller plates inside the geometry you've made," she says. "It all fits together like a jigsaw puzzle."

Once you visit Beat-up Creations, you will see their hilarious sense of humor. They have a fantastic collection of decoupaged china, in which they use orphaned antique plates and transform them into new modern portrait plates. Create a centerpiece plate in your collections to display the fun side of your personality.

Bryonie Porter, is also well known for their decoupaged furniture. Using exquisite wall-paper designs, they take vintage attractive furniture and applyprints which would fool you into thinking they were hand painted much like chinoiserie furniture. If you have a blue transferware collection, consider wallpapering your favorite chest with toile wallpaper to add a unique flare to your favorite collection.

How to Decoupage A Transferware Plate

1. Cuting out the images is one of the most tedious parts of decoupaging. For a professional look, it is important that you take the extra time to cut out crisp images.

Secondly, great graphics are needed. Did you know that many wallpaper stores simply throw out their samples every few months? When I lived in Virginia, many of the paint stores sold wallpaper, and every couple of months, books with dozens of stunning prints would go into the dumpster.

Libraries are another excellent resource. Thousands of prints can be found there, and photocopied for your own personal use. (Do look into copyrights if you plan on doing it as a professional hobby)

Do not use your original cutouts. If you damage the original, you have no fallback, and many times to create a theme using a graphic most people use the same graphic in multiple places. Most copy centers have laser printers which copies can made, deduced or blown up. Laser copies are less susceptible to ink bleed than ink jet copies.

On to Decoupaging Transferware........

1. Lay out the pieces out as you would want them to look on your plate. When you are happy with the way they look, you are ready to apply the glue.

1B. Make sure that your plate is dry and free from any kind of dirt.

2. Before applying the glue, submerge your piece in a bowl of water large enough to hold a single image and fill it with water. Let the image "relax" until it stops curling and floats freely without wrinkles. With a bit of glue on your fingers, lift the image carefully, and position the image on the glued surface.

When you’ve got all your images in place, gently spread the glue across the image. Coating the piece with a coat of Mod Podge will give it a glossy look just like china.

On to Decoupaging Clear Plates........

1. Pick out your images, and arrange them in a way that looks attractive on your plate.

2. Apply a coat of decoupage to the back of your plate.

3. Submerge your cut-outs of wallpaper into water. Then submerge the image into a plate containing the glue Mod Podge and apply them to the plate.

4. With a foam brush, apply a generous layer of decoupage glue over the cut-out pieces.

Helpful Decoupaging Tips

- Avoid decoupaging with thin paper. Thin paper often wrinkles, and tears very easily.

-Many copy stores are capable of producing beautiful prints that can blown up to cover any large piece of furniture.

- Ink-jet photo copies smear when submerged in water and varnish products.

-Keep your hands wet or the paper will tear.

- Use a wet paint brush sponge and and work out excess glue, water, and air. Work outward from the center using a foam roller to flatten the surface and even out the glue under neath your print.

-Avoid bending or crumpling the print, as it gives the finished product a bumpy, ugly look.

-Within the first hour after the application, check your plate or furniture piece to smooth out any air bubbles with wet fingers. Let your furniture dry overnight.

After your piece completely dries within a 48 hour time period, you will need to apply a sealer. It is extremely important that your first coat is a water based polycrylic. If you use an oil based polyurethane, it will leave spots in your collage, and potentially ruin it.

Modge Podge seals collages which dries to a rock hard finish. It can also DOUBLE AS GLUE. It can be used to glue your paper down and and seal your final piece. Modge Podge is available in Gloss, Satin and Mattefinishes. Mod Podge also has an excellent line of fabric glue.

While many people decoupage plates, some people enjoy decoupaging furniture. After years of painting furniture, I had to learn the hard way that a water based polycrylic clear sealer is always the very best option on white painted furniture. The first time I used an oil based polyurethane my beautiful white dresser had a yellow hue to it. Over time, the polyurethane just gets darker.

Polycrylic comes in a satin and semi gloss, and gloss finish. It also comes in a beautiful spray, which makes it much easier to produce a clean even finish.

Both polycrylic and Mod Podge are excellent products that seal furniture, but if you wish to additionally add an oil based spray lacquer, use it after you have applied 2 layers of polycrylic.

Acrylic lacquer avoids the yellowing problems associated with nitrocellulose lacquer. Acrylic resins go on crystal-clear and stay that way over time. The most widely used Acrylic lacquers is called CAB-acrylic lacquer, made with cellulose acetate butyrate and acrylic resin.

John Derian is a professional decoupage artist who also happens to be collector of 18th and 19th century paper printed antique documents and letters. Most anyone who decoupages, knows of John Derian. His passion are maps, trade cards, and handwritten letters. "I seemed to be drawn to the 19th century. There are so many beautiful lithographs (from that era), so I started collecting them."

It all started 16 years ago when he found himself drawn to vintage cards and almanacs. He found himself collecting enlarging parts of handwritten letters from the 1800s for a collage experiment, and it was at that point when his hobby started making money. His technique which is known as "reverse decoupage" is where he applies his carefully cut photocopied prints to the backs of clear glass plates.

He recently told the Denver Post that when he was 20, he was enrolled in college, but found himself more drawn to antique hunting, so he skipped school and went after his passions full time. (John Derian Photographed By Ryan Benyi)

When his passion started becoming a full time job, he decided to open up his business in Manhattan's East Village. At the time, he hoped it would just pay the rent. Today he sells a collection of wares to 300 stores, including your local Target. John Derian's decoupage plates in New York are hand crafted, while his line for Target is mass produced for the public.

Ralph Lauren's Le Grand Hotel Collection is an inspirational response to the coastal elegance of a Riviera. Coastal decorating has become one of the most popular decorating styles, as it evokes a calming refreshment from the hectic and stressful lifestyles we all find ourselves stuck in. Although marine decorating is most commonly seen in conjunction with distressed paint finishes, natural textiles and shabby finishes, RL shows us that we can have the city lifestyle in a serene setting. The Grand Hotel collection sweeps the beauty of the maritime with beautiful rich palettes of navy, cream and white with touches of gold. When we think of the coast lines of Italy and the frontier of France, we get the spender of a rich lifestyle that encompasses the best of food and romance. Today many coast lines are lined with marble skyscrapers and tremendously beautiful views that it has become an attractive escape for many people. Ralph Lauren shows us the luxury side of nautical decorating, and how to richly incorporate transferware pottery along side other accessories for a classic blue and white home.

What is the secret to Lauren's luxurious shoreline look?

Featured in the home collection are bedrooms joined together by a drawing room, all unified by a maritime palette; navy-and-white and cream-and-gold.

In the first room, an impecably dressed tufted pinstripe bed shows us that the executive feel doesn't need to leave the office. The French walnut Louis XV bed accents the navy nicely as the ornamental brass accents and paw feet give way to the established grandeur of the room. Classic nautical elements such as brass, are paired with floral porcelain lamps, as we see with the neoclassical polished brass side tables.

The lavish details of formal Louis furniture go hand in hand with the upscale look of transferware china. Transferware has been tremendously popular in country cottage estates, but in this instance Ralph Lauren shows us that it unites with nautical decorating simultaneously.

Blue and white ginger jars sit atop a Italian walnut chest. The combination offers a different texture all the while complementing each other. The antiqued brass pulls again give way to classic nautical style.

Lauren's second room evokes the timeless beauty of french decorating. The room is situated around the fresh feeling that only white can bring, mixed with the grandiose of gold and slight hints of navy. Where the other room held the masculine richness, this room is softened by florals and silk details. The white framed gilded bed is decked with silk-lined linen pillows,a natural coverlet and finished off with an upholstered french gilded bench. A glass-topped white Louis XV desk is paired with a clear glass lamp and accompanies a gilded white Louis bergere chair which gives way to the soft finishes of this room.

The drawing room features many elements which pulls both rooms together. Croc-embossed picture frames with many leather accents provide a masculine touch to this nautical home. Informal marine striped throw pillows provide a comfortable setting amongst the white walls. One cannot help but notice the Louis XVI-style chair upholstered in masculine suit stripe. Along side that is a distressed leather Louis chair with a striking gold frame which is undeniably the show piece of the room. Woven dining chairs wouldn't be the common choice in such a luxurious home, but work perfectly in a nautical setting.

A table furnished with tableware in blue, white and gold set the tone for dining in this nautical home. With layers of white and chevron-striped chargers, indigo floral porcelain and navy gold-banded china give way to extravagent dining. It wouldn't be complete without the brass napkin rings and gold plated flatware.

Some things we cannot live without: The rich oil blue paintings on the wall. The over sized ornate blue and white Chinese vase and large planters. The gilt ornate french leather chairs, and the unique pin striped accents which take the cake! We love it!

During the 18th century there was a wave of popularity of Chinese hand-painted chinoiserie. The many patterns of Chinese landscapes and scences made their way on hand panted wallpaper, chinoiserie furniture, and of course on the china. Themost famous transfer ware pattern was developed in the late 18th century by Thomas Minton of the Caughley Factory in Shropshire, England. His Blue Willow pattern combined Oriental images into a romantic scene that has been manufactured for over 220 years . The Spode factory produced the pattern in England in the late 1790s that turned to be popular in England, but also in America. It was found that Blue and white were the most popular colors for dishes in the 19th century from historical sites. In fact many people are avid collectors of the Blue Willow Pattern today. The Blue Willow pattern is not an exact copy of a Chinese pattern but features several traditional Chinese designs. The pattern has changed in variations over time but the basic elements are the temple or palace, a footbridge with three people, a boat with another figure, a willow tree, and the two birds.

What is the story behind the Blue Willow Pattern?

The pattern tells of two ill-fated Chinese lovers. The story has several variations, (as I am sure all stories this old)but the basic story line remains the same. A beautiful young girl from a prominent family falls in love with her father's clerk. They are prevented being married and so decide to elope. Her father pursues them , as some stories may say. In other versions, they are killed by fire. The story end with the fantasy fairytale of two lover transformed into love birds, which continue their love.

The process of producing one set was laborious and costly. Once the mass production of transfer printing came about, middle class families could enjoy dinnerware sets similar to that found in the higher class families but at an affordable price.

The transfer printing process was developed by John Sadler and Guy Green of Liverpool in 1756. The process starts with an engraved copper plate similar to those used for making paper engravings. The plate is used to print the pattern on tissue paper, then the tissue paper transfers the wet ink to the ceramic surface.

Hand-Engraved Roller is an alternative method which is uses for continuous printing. PhotoCredit Nick Pope

Hand-Pressed Border, A tissue design is applied by hand and rubbed on to the ware. A water bath disintegrates the tissue, leaving only the pattern.

The pottery is then dipped in water to float off the paper, glazed, and re-fired.

The ceramic is then fired in a low temperature kiln to fix the pattern. This can be done over or under the glaze, but the underprinting method is more durable.

Transfer printing was originally produced in single-color items only, with colors in blue, red, black, brown, purple and green. Brown tended to be rather a common and inexpensive color, while blue was the most popular, and expensive color. Later, technology developed to allow double or triple color transfers. Often, the rim of a plate was in one color and the center design in another.

Is it important for Transferware to have the maker’s name on it?
No, infact, many pieces that are made by unknown artists are very much collectable. Transferware value is determined by demand, date, quality of the printing, and rarity. Unmarked transferware can be difficult to determine its origin, but you can often trace a piece, or make a guess on the , glaze, styling and decoration technique. Our motto is collect what patterns you love, and they become valuable in your eyes. (BLUE-TRANSFER-WARE-TRANSFERWARE-HAM-TURKEY-PLATTER-Ebay-Seller-dmcb12564)

Here are some quick tips:

-Transferware patterns made between 1842 and 1883 were registered with the Patent Office in London, and have a date registration mark on the back of the plate.

- The word "Limited" (or an abbreviation such as "Ld." or "Ltd.") in the pottery firm's name indicates a date after 1860 and was not generally used until the 1880s.

-Any piece having the word "Trade Mark" was manufactured after the Trade Mark Act of 1862, and is known to have a manufacture date after 1875.

-After 1884, the registry adopted a single number series, e.g., "Rd. No. 12342", which today can be used to determine a pattern registration date to within approximately one year. Registration numbers greater than 360,000 indicate a date after 1900.

- Transferware patterns made between 1890 and 1920 usually has ‘England’ printed on the back which were to comply with the Mckinley Tariff Act. "Made In England" indicates 20th Century origins.

- Transferware patterns made after 1920 reveal the mark is ‘Made In England’.

In a previous post I reccomended cutting out the shapes of your plates (or pictures) with newspaper and arranging them on the floor first and then working your way to the wall.

How do you do this?

Simply trace your plate out on a piece of newspaper. Punch out an obvious hole where the nail would line up with your metal plate hangers. Then after you have all your cut outs, and have arranged a lovely pattern with all the cut outs on the floor, start with the center of your design and (thumb) tack the cutout to the wall.

(BUT first measure the distance of the two plates on either side of that middle plate) So you will want to measure the distance between nail holes.

Measure (on the floor of your design) from the center nail hole of that middle plate and and hammer the nail where the hole would line up on your wall. Then take the other two measurements of the neighbour plates and draw those spots on the wall. Does your cut outs all line up?

Once you have the center plates lined up, it is all down hill from there.

I have messed up many walls in the past guessing where the hole may be. With my best intentions and careful measurements they still always turned off center. With cut outs you simply miss the multiple steps of pulling out the nail and filling it with puddy. Enjoy the pictures

During the 1820s, they found that blue was found blur naturally. It became quite popular among collectors, and held in the highest regard by many and detested by others. Dispite the differences in opinion, large quantities of the transferware were produced and today collected by thousands yearly. Manufactures of the plates figured ways of enhancing the blurry plates - “by instilling lime or chloride of ammonia in the sagger while glazing.” (Williams, Flow Blue China, 1971, pg 5) Like it or hate it, flow blue is here to stay

As technology was increasing, so did the colors. By the time transferware's popularity peaked, between 1810 - 1860 the colors came forth. Blue in pale and dark colors came forth, as well as green, red, pink, purple, yellow, black and brown were available. Brown was added to the color scheme in 1852 and later, during the Aesthetic Movement, became a primary color for potters. As one contemporary collector remarked about the transferware produced at that time, “Brown was the only color they (the potteries) did very well.”

Purple Transferware Michael Luppino

Purple transferware can come in a hue of shades from a blush rose to a pink through to a lavender to deep wine. Many collectors refer to purple transferware as “mulberry,” the color is known as purple. For a lighter shabby chic look, to a English green formal cigar room, the color purple can be that extra punch you are looking for.

You may be thinking why would you ever put English green walls with purple? In fact, they are the perfect combination. Below, I included a color wheel (from realcolorwheel.com) to illustrate some of the color choices you can work with. Generally if your transferware is Purple, the colors opposite on the color wheel will work in your interior decor. OR, you can use the neighbour colors to the left or the right of the color wheel. It is the perfect cheat sheet to great interior design.

The following year, they cultivated the American soil and harvested bountiful crops. They had much to be thankful for in their new life, that they decided to hold a feast of thanskgiving, which was the origin of Thanksgiving Day. George Washington, the first American president, suggested that November 26th be appointed as Thanksgiving Day, but then in 1863, as the long and bloody Civil War came to an end, and Abraham Lincoln asked all Americans to set aside the last Thursday in November as a day of thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Day is one of the largest national festivals celebrated in America. There are many speculations that Thanksgiving came from the Holy Biblical feast of first fruits. This may or may not be correct., as many speculate the immigrants kept the festivals, and they eventually categorized it under a new name for the secular society. What are the biblical festivals? For hundreds of years before Jesus Christ, God set up 5 exciting celebrations in Lev 23 and gave his believers specific details how about to keep them. Amazingly, all these festivals were set up for future events to occur on that very date. Within all the 5 festivals lined up with prophecies or foreshadows of events that would occur in the future.

For more information about these biblical feasts around the same time of thanksgiving, read these articles, 1, and 2.

People love to get together with their families for a nice dinner, and we absolutely love the The Wild Turkey plates by the Johnson Bros. These turkey plates were made by Johnson Bros. were made from 1955 to 1983.

Early multicolored transferware was achieved by the labor intensive process known as clobbering, or in easy terms -hand-painting applied over the glaze. However, in 1848, an advanced technique allowed three colors to be applied in a single transfer with only one firing. Occasionally, two or three shades, other combinations were also used.

The chrysanthemums are their trademark design for centuries. Danish designer Louise Campbell even called for a departure from the company's classic blue. In its place: tangerine, turquoise and midnight black Royal Copenhagen held a monopoly on the "Blue Fluted" name. Royal Copenhagen's exclusive Flora Danica dinnerware pattern and its Blue Fluted porcelain pattern, first produced in 1775 and still hand-painted today.

Ebay is the best place to find transferware at a reasonable price. Before Ebay, a person would have to go hunting from one antique store to the next to find a set for their good china, but today transferware can be collected rather easily that you can easily make it your every day ware. Mix and match your patterns to make it more interesting. Set your table with several different transferware patterns in the same color. If you do use your transferware for daily use, be sure to protect the glaze by hand washing your dishes. Avoid serving any foods that have a natural stain, and do not use knives on your transferware. At only a couple dollars per plate, you might as well eat in style~
